When I Was Water - Deena Linett
Deena Linett’s poems travel vast distances. Chile, Iceland, Laos, Japan—these are a few of the far-flung locales that comprise the poet’s tireless globetrotting. But more significant than any position on a map are the poet’s wandering lyric tendencies, for they accommodate sudden, seamless shifts of time and span an enormous emotional range. Exploiting a supple iambic line, she navigates memory and precise observation to arrive some point between grace and mystery, where “odd knowing sails / and disappears” and people give “open spaces names to tell us where we are.” The best Linett poems are viscerally thrilling because their balances of “order / and ongoingness” insist upon a relation between revelation and moral responsibility.
